So many bankrupted
« on: 07/12/09, 16:58:13 »
I declared myself bankrupt on Friday 4th dec. It wasn't an enjoyable experience especially since I had to dodge the TV crews who were parked at the (only entrance). I paid the £522, handed over my paperwork for checking and swore the affadavit. I was asked to return at 2.30 then given the bankruptcy order. No interviews-nothing. They said so many people were filing that the OR was too busy to see them all. At 3pm I left the court. I went straight into Barclays Bank, told them what had happened and opened an account with no trouble at all. VISA debit card, telephone ane internet banking for free. The PIN number arrived today and I left the bank with an account number. It was so easy.

The court staff were hand picked for their charm (not!) and it was ironic to read signs warning against being rude or insulting to their staff. The huge bankrupcy sign above the desk wasn't nice but it was in an isolated part of the court and everyone was there for the same thing.

Obviously I would have prefered not to have to do it but it was over in 4.5 hours (5 if you include the bank account). It really wasn't as bad as I thought. As I left the court I took a call from a creditor. The minute I mentioned bankruptcy they just asked for the court details and said they wouldn't call again....I doubt that will happen with them all but I live in hope.

Good luck everyone.

Micawber,

I'm sorry to hear about frankly your terrible day. In my mind it should not be conducted in that manner.

The difference in my mind is perception, you can view the court date with trepidation and fear of being judged/scrutinised for your situation... With this view nothing positive is created and essentially you live in fear up until the court date.

I personally view this day as the day you walk in burdened with debt and social fear, only to leave with a fresh slate, a new life and a future full of positivity. The burden is gone!!

I hope that this is of help to other people worried about the day of the court... Of course it isn't a nice day, but ironically it is probably the best day of your life!

Best of luck!
